THE DASTARDLY DOCTOR DEVEREAUX

Hatchet & Devereaux.

Thursday evening was the opening night of the Putaruru Theatre Players production, The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux in their Kensington Theatre, Putaruru. This melodrama was set to open in April until Covid 19 changed everything, but when levels allowed, the team were all keen to go on with the show. And that they admirably proceeded to do last night.

The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux is sharply directed by Jordan Harper with Anna Isemonger the Production Manager. Book and Lyrics are by Billy St John with Music by Debbie Wilson.

The action takes place in the Hanover de Cash Clinic, owned by the newly widowed Lotta Cash (Leigh Mcmanus), but coveted by the devious Dr Dogsbreath Devereaux (Steve Hill ) and his nasty accomplice Nurse Hilda Hatchett (Karen Goodacre). Nurse Wendy March (Jordan Harper), (young and idealistic, but not the Ides of kind) has a secret that could stop Devereaux from getting his hands on Cash’s cash so he will have to be kept in check.

Nurse March is attracted to Dr Phil Good (James Ridgway) from the clinic and along with dippy Nurse Ivy Dripp (Rosie Julia Stewart), Orderly Ward helper (Timatanga Baigent), dancer Trixie St James (Te Rongorito Temarama-Swinkels), Burlesque dancers, Officer Tommy Gunn (Nicholas Wooliams) and Sister Sunbeam (Rosie Hill), intrigues ensure.

Dogsbreath Devereaux, plots to wed and do away with widow Lotta Cash so he can inherit her fortune and her late husband’s clinic – take the money and stay, not run.

Thus we have the key elements of a melodrama, a lecherous villain, a beautiful young heroine, a handsome noble hero and a quirky cast of characters. The audience all contributed in the traditional melodrama way – boo, hiss, cheer.

All the leads made strong contributions to The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux with strong voices, spirited acting and clear dialogue. There was colourful dancing and also a clean set that added to the enjoyability of the evening.

Actors from Left to Right: Steve Hill, Simone Wooliams, Phoebe Gibbons, Jessica Cole, Te Rongorito Temarama-Swinkels, Victoria Isemonger, Rosie Hill and Rosie Stewart.

Running gag announcements over the hospital PA provided plenty of puns along the way. The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux runs through until 17 October with tickets available at Van Dyks, Putaruru. Why not enjoy it with a friend or two…
